In 2016, I was invited by a classmate to participate in a public service activity to help blind people run. This kind of help was like that a rope was tied to the hand of a blind person, and the other end of the rope was held by a normal person. The normal person pulled the blind person to bypass all the obstacles and run. When I saw a lot of blind friends feel excited on "arm swinging", I felt that this kind of activity was very meaningful. However, in the era when electronic technologies are so advanced, this kind of help was so primitive. It was extremely incredible for me, a senior "science geek" who had been obsessed with circuits since I was 17 years old.
Therefore, I persuaded Dr. Zhou Ji, who had worked with me in AMD for more than 10 years, to found NextVPU together. We were committed to apply the AI computer vision technology that we were very good at to the electronic products that could help the visually impaired people to travel and avoid obstacles, recognize objects and characters, and better perceive the world.
There are 285 million people with vision impairment all over the world. They live in endless darkness and need the help in their daily life and travel. However, they are eager to be independent and are curious about the outside world. When our invented AngelEye smart glasses and AngelEye smart readers can help them travel and read, and have received the praise and positive feedback from users in dozens of countries and regions, I realize that all efforts and sufferings in the research and development process are worthwhile. This also encourages me to lead the team to develop more AngelEye series of products.
Intelligent assistive device for the blind is one of the application scenarios of NextVPU AI visual processing chip. A series of chips designed by us will also be applied to various industries and fields, such as smart city, smart home, and smart retail. We make all efforts to enable intelligent devices to have the same visual perception and understanding ability as human beings, complete complex work in different environments, and help people's work and life in all aspects. This is the goal that I will pursue through my life.
Alan Feng graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China and the University of Southampton, UK, majoring in microelectronics. Before founding NextVPU, he established and led a global R&D team of 100+ people in AMD, led and participated in the design of over 50 types of CPU and GPU chips with tens of millions shipment, mainly used in many products, including Microsoft Xbox One, Sony PlayStation 4, server, desktop, laptop, aircraft airborne computer, etc. In 2016, he founded NextVPU and has been CEO since then.
Zhou Ji graduated from Zhejiang University and acquired his PhD degree in the state key laboratory of CAD, majoring in 3D image reconstruction. He used to be the chief architect in AMD's computer vision, image signal processing and video fields and was responsible for algorithm and architecture design. As a scientist and architecture designer in the previous fields, he has designed and developed several generations of hardware IP for multiple GPUs and APUs of AMD for more than ten years, and has acquired a number of related patents in both China and the United States. In 2016, he co-founded NextVPU and has been CTO since then.
Hugo Cai Haijiao graduated as a bachelor from China University of Technology and became a PhD of electronic engineering in Chinese Academy of Sciences. In NextVPU, he developed a series of innovative solutions based on the self-developed AI chips, and invented the AngelEye series of smart products, covering the global market of vision-assistive devices. He used to be in charge of Cheetah Mobile's innovative product department, where he broadened the company's intelligent hardware and IoT business and launched the company's first intelligent hardware product. He used to be the technical director of Google TV software of Marvell company and provided R&D support to renowned companies such as Google and Sony to realize the mass production of tens of millions of intelligent products.
Victor Wang Qi graduated as a bachelor from China University of Technology and acquired his master degree in Fudan University. He started his career in Midea Group and worked in Hong Kong GP Batteries. He led the expansion of GP in the Chinese robot market, and achieved five times growth in three years. During the period of co-founding NextVPU, he established the brand image of AngelEye technology to assist the disabled in China, and achieved the largest market share in this field. He led the company to expand overseas business in more than 20 developed countries, making NextVPU become a leading enterprise in the low vision field in China.
As a person who was born to be blind, Cai Dongyue is very interested in the use of technological products. He built his own website in 2008 and self-studied audio post production in 2009, and helped the government, schools and enterprises to record and produce professional audio works. In 2010, he entered the field of barrier-free design, and provided suggestions to Xiaomi, Baidu, and AngelEye to help improve the barrier-free reading products, so as to make the products easier to use for the blind.
